Dictionary

This Glossary is provided to help guests understand more about the rental of inns, resorts and vacation rentals. It is not comprehensive but serves as a primer for terms guests may encounter in renting specialty lodging. Not all terms apply to all properties or managers.

Edging

Tilting one or both skis onto either edge, usually to prevent slipping.

Elgeurial (BFM)

It is an invert where the halfpipe wall is approached fakie, the rear hand is planted, a 360-degree backside rotation is made, and the rider lands going forward. This is named after Eddie Elguera.

Epic

Anything that is totally awesome. e.g. "That jump was wicked epic", "That board is epic"

Erial

Express chair

High speed chair lift

Extension

The opposite of compression, usually refers to straightening of the body, arms or legs.

Face Plant

Landing face first.
Or
When you fall and plant your face deep in the snow.

Fakie

Riding backwards.

Fakie To Ass

When attempting a rail or picnic table Fakie that you fall off rail or table and land hard on your ass.

Fall line

The line a snow-ball would take down a given slope - the steepest, shortest, and fastest line down any given slope.
Or
A fall line is the line that follows the general slope of the hill.

Falling Leaf

Beginner snowboarder that rides one edge horizontally, back and forth, the whole way down the slope.

Fan method

A more traditional method of teaching downhill turning techniques whereby the student gradually decreases their angle of approach to the fall-line with each successive attempt to produce a single turn.

Fancy Pants

Some old fart of a two-planker that's wearing snowpants from the 80s - the one that's like hunting while skiing or making a hippy statement.

Feesh

Cool foreign dude from the Andes that pulls lots of hot chick with his South American charm.

Finger Drift

A narrow snow drift (30 cm to 1 metre in width) crossing a roadway. Several finger drifts in succession resemble the fingers of a hand.

Finnish step

Firn

Snow which has been lying for at least a year but which has not yet consolidated into glacier ice. It is granular.

Five phase

A transition from diagonal stride to a double-pole variant, this technique is achieved by resting both arms in front of the body (as in four phase), and then either double poling from this position and bringing the feet together (faster), or first striding onto one foot and then double poling and bringing the feet together .

Flat ski

A ski held parallel to the surface of the snow, with neither edge closer than the other.
